First NFL game outside of North America

Posted by nickxyz on October 28, 2007

Did anyone actually watch the game Giants vs Dolphins in London at the Wembley stadium??

I only saw a short report on MSNBC (??) earlier this afternoon regarding the prep work required and some English spectator commentaries, but nothing of the actual game. Not even sure if it has been broadcast here in the US yet, maybe tomorrow as part of Monday night Football (was too lazy to actually scour the TV guide).

The intent behind “outsourcing” an official NFL game to outside of the US is still somewhat fuzzy for me. Can it be to just drum up more support for this highly profitable US sport abroad to translate into increased memorabilia and clothing sales world wide? Could there be something in the works that would “annex” the European league into the NFL? Or are there plans to create a worldwide league of some sort?

Imagine Frankfurt Galaxy against the KC Chiefs… *screen gets blurry* Welcome to the first official league play between the recently incorporated Frankfurt Galaxy and one of the worst Football teams in NFL history, live from the Frankfurt Waldstadium!

How much would you be willing to pay for the ticket???

Zeitgeist – Most popular searches on Google

Posted by nickxyz on October 22, 2007

Ran across the Google Zeitgeist (pre 2007) site that lists the most popular key words or searches that run across Google. They even “analyze” social and cultural events in order to correlate them with their current searches. Very cool.

Also check out the Zeitgeist replacement – Hot Trends, updated in regular intervals. As if one really needed to know what other people are searching for on the web…. H*** yeah!

Halloween 2007

Posted by nickxyz on October 17, 2007

Halloween, the pagan Holiday the last day of October… The US, being the country that is so intent on separating anything spiritual or religious from any state affairs, I am quite amazed at how widely celebrated this holiday actually is. Especially here in the center of the bible belt!

Last year, the amount of kiddies who came by our lit porch was enormous (Btw, one is supopsed to leave the porch light on if trick or treaters are welcome that night). We had bought plenty of provisions and were fairly sure that some of the goodies were going to be left over for us to enjoy later. Well, not quite true. We had about 5 pounds of candy of all shapes and forms and sizes, thinking it would be more than enough. About 2 hours into the evening, after scores of monsters, ghost and football stars had passed by our door, the candy was all gone. Every last tiny piece of candy.

The award of best costume went to a neigborhood teenager who had made up his own costume: an iPod. Very creative and very nicely done indeed. Unfortunately, we didn’t take any pictures… Something we will most definitely be doing this year.

My Gardening Attempts

Posted by nickxyz on October 14, 2007

Most recent pepper harvestAs mentioned previously, I stubbornly and repeatedly try my hand at gardening. Mostly with less than desirable results because I seem to be lacking the proverbial green thumb.

Nevertheless, I go out and plant “stuff” all around the house and my little specialized patch of dirt in the backyard. This season I tried my hand at cherry tomatoes and green peppers. The tomatoes yielded a nice crop throughout the spring and summer, nothing to write home about, but very handy for salads and the occasional dip of color in our meals.

Now, the peppers on the other hand are an entirely different story. I planted some seeds fairly late in the season (slacker), hoping I would get at least one or two plants this year. Well, all of the seeds actually have grown into nice sized pepper plants. They did not appear to be producing much fruit over the summer, a little small pepper in odd shapes here and there; so my expectations for them were not too high either. Over the last 5 or 6 weeks, those plants have gone berserk… outputting fruit of unheard amounts. Really good sized, plump, juicy and great smelling peppers (yes, peppers can have a pleasant smell… mind you, that is before they start to rot!) … It is the middle of October now and there is still blossoms on the plants. Just today, I went out to take a look after the torrential downpour yesterday to see what was left over. And ended up with 8 really nice specimen…. at least 4 more are waiting to be picked within the next few days as well. My luck might be turning around after all.

Indian Summer

Posted by nickxyz on October 13, 2007

No such luck this year. We are about 3 weeks into the official fall season and the weather has been very pleasant up to this point. While the nights could dip into some fairly cold regions, the days were very mild and sunny. Up until last night.

Late in the evening, it started to rain cats and dogs (or like they say in the Midwest “like a cow peeing on a flat rock”). Lightning and thunder were not far behind. This natural spectacle went on the entire night with the sky lit up as if it were day about every 2 to 3 minutes. That makes it kinda hard trying to sleep.

Finally around 9 am this morning, it stopped. The National Weather service had already announced several flash flood warnings for our area lasting until some time this afternoon. Some local areas have received more than 1 inch of rain in about 15 minutes. Probably translates into Turkey Creek turning into an involuntary outdoor public pool again.

To boot, I get down into the kitchen to get some coffee going, the kitchen window sill is dripping with water! How nice. Turns out that some of the siding outside was somehow penetrated by the wind and rain and allowed some water to seep in. I guess our weekend project has just revealed itself.

I am very much tempted to call our builder and share the “good” news with him, since our house is barely 4 years old. I know it / he won’t help a thing, but it sure would help me vent! Never have nor ever will I understand the American home building principles of wood frame.
