Harry Potter

Posted by nickxyz on July 28, 2007

Yes, I have read every single last book there is in the Harry Potter series, including the most recent one, Year 7. Had it even pre-ordered and it showed up promptly on my doorstep on July 21st.

After all the anticipation, the news, the speculations, I was pretty much glued to the pages until finished. Had the 700+ page book done by Wednesday. Definitely dark, definitely no longer a children’s book and boy am I glad it now has an ending… Being left hanging at the end of each year was pretty stressful 🙂

Since Year 5 just made it into the movies about 2 weeks ago, I had to also watch that one. Didn’t want to get into all the youngsters and mega hype about it as it had just come out, so I patiently waited until this weekend to go see it.

It was quite a bit longer than the customary 90 minute movies, almost approaching 2.5 hours, but sitting through it, one hardly notices the length. While quite obvious that it would not be able to go into all the details that the book goes into, and understanding that some cutting would have to be done regardless, I still felt the movie to have a nice coherent story line. Unlike some other book adaptations that were missing most of the main plot and the subtleties that develop the characters into what they are in the book… Granted, some subplots had somewhat been accerlerated, but the main story line was still kept intact. Example in point, the anxiety and angst Harry is experiencing was nicely depicted. Unfortunately, Ron’s character development away from the nervous, frightened little boy to a stronger, more settled character was not quite as obvious. On the other hand, the actress portraying Luna’s character did a marvelous job! A very successful walk of the fine line between a naive, tree hugging dreamer and a very grounded, realistic and emotionally strong character, who very much goes her own way.

Go spend the money on a movie stub!

It’s done

Posted by nickxyz on July 26, 2007

ok, I reviewed the “proof” copy of my literary works and approved the one final last version for printing! Finally! With the book now approved, the process will take about another 6 weeks or so until it is actually available via the major book stores, wholesalers and any retail stores…

I will most certainly post a link here for everyone to take a look!

The American Dream – Land Ownership

Posted by nickxyz on July 22, 2007

The American Dream of owning one’s own piece of heaven, be it a fleck of dirt, rich farming soil, a paddock for the horses or the cows….. owning a piece of land somewhere is gaining more and more popularity. Especially for the city dwellers, who would just love to have a weekend getaway or retreat.

Well, being the good citizens that we are, we bought into that very same dream 🙂 So we went and began to scout out possibilities of owning land close to home. Have been doing that for about 2 months now. This weekend now, we actually went to look at the first property.

It indeed is BFE, off a dead end road that has some gravel, surrounded by forest. Strange enough, my cell phone still got reception as my mum from overseas happened to call me right as we walked the perimeter. The land itself is very much interesting considering our intentions of owning hunting ground. Plenty of deer and turkey abound, it even has a small pond with some fish in it. On the down side, the owner is not quite sure yet, if they actually want to see it… that would beg the question as to why it is even available for showings…

The area is quite nice, it is not too far into town, less than 3 miles, but secluded enough to truly get away from the dreaded weekend work calls and would provide the opportunity to truly be one with nature. We did get a first taste of that concept yesterday. Lots of mosquitos, all sorts of bugs and best of all, quite a few ticks… despite having sprayed down prior to our treck into wilderness.

So now what? Came, saw it, liked it… are we going to actually buy it? No definite answer on that front; we are still deliberating all the pros and cons, not to forget that the current owner would like to see a considerable amount of cash exchange hands prior to him parting with the land title…

New Toy 2

Posted by nickxyz on July 15, 2007

It’s alive! As of this afternoon, the new toy is indeed alive and kicking….

Surprisingly enough, the install of all components and drivers was fairly easy and straightforward. At this point, I am not going to install any RAID configs or SLI, as I only have one huge HD and one simple monitor anyway… the setup doesn’t have to be overkill, just because I can….

Currently, two major resource consuming applications are installing and I am anxious to see how they run. On the old machine (granted on a Celeron processor), the apps worked, but were sooooo slow at times it wasn’t even funny any more. One of the newer games even refused to install at all! Tells you what I am running 🙂

My chosen graphics card is the Nvidia eGeForce 8600; while it is a little on the high end side costwise, it is certainly worth every single last cent. I already ran a highly graphics intense game just now and the rendering of the environment, characters is aweseome!

This just as a quick update….
